StateCraft
A downloadable game
StateCraft is a new board game of political strategy that will challenge how you think about diplomacy, leadership, and cooperation, bringing these issues to the table at a moment when the world seriously needs them.
You will become the leader of a nation over an 8-year political cycle, navigating ongoing debates on international relations, economic instability, climate disasters, cyberwar, and political crises. Depending on the country you represent, you will have different types of resources available. Various events will put pressure on these resources and you must decide which action to take. Each event and action includes additional conditions and implications, both for you and other players, making the decisions about cooperation increasingly challenging and surprising.
However, your decisions affect not only your individual resources and other countries but also global conditions. If levels of Global Stability, Climate Pressure, or Public Trust reach zero, all players lose and the game stops immediately. Therefore, as global events unfold, you improve your position by adding to your resources while cooperating with other players and protecting global conditions.
The game experience is designed to immerse players in high-stakes political leadership where they must make strategic decisions under pressure while managing national resources. Players constantly balance national and global interests, leading to tense and meaningful decision-making in each turn.
This game is relevant to the present day given the increasing tension and instability of modern global politics, where several countries have transformed diplomacy into transactional geopolitical rivalry. StateCraft makes players reflect about individual interests and collaboration, and the complexity of political leadership. Players will face dilemmas that force them to choose between cooperation and competition. Existing political negotiation board games are typically focused on one theme, such as military alliances (e.g. Diplomacy, by Alan B. Calhamer) or climate change (e.g. Kyoto, by Sabine Harrer and Johannes Krenner). StateCraft introduces a new level of realism by mixing events and crises based on current events and across many topics, better reflecting the complexities of real-world political decision-making. The game rewards flexibility and cooperation, and encourages discussions about diplomacy, responsibility, and relations in the modern world.
At the present stage, the game prototype includes 20 event cards and 20 action cards, to be tested in a 2-3 player setting. However, Expansion Packs can be added at any moment, allowing more players per game, reducing the risk of players becoming too familiar with the events and actions, and introducing new challenges to the game to reflect real-life developments across the world.
